LGBTQ+ and
 their representation
IN THE MEDIA.

LGBTQ+ is defined as the acronym “used to describe a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.” (The center, n.d.). The representation of the queer community has been ignored for years by the media. Moreover, queer people have been strongly criticized and even delegitimized. Their presence in media has increased, but it still has significant challenges to overcome that will be presented in this blog.

 Sex education

Streaming networks have a significant audience nowadays. For instance, the Serie sex education from Netflix was informed to have been watched by 40 million accounts viewed it in its first month, according to Netflix ( As cited by Gajanan, 2019). The Serie represents not only communities that have barely been represented by the media, but it shows portrayals of queer teens and the journey to find out who they are. As described by Bergado (2020) one of the queerest teen comedy ever, this Netflix series is a crowd favorite.

The media can be an instrument of change, it can maintain the status quo and reflect the views of society or it can, hopefully, awaken people and change minds.

MY
VIEW

The LGBTQ+ community has had a long journey, not only about legal matters for their human rights to be respected but also to have a proper representation in the media. Illustrating human complexity in the different social channels can be challenging and at some point almost impossible. Nevertheless, the industry must create content that can educate and empower humanity. Media has as their main goal to entertain the audience, but the social responsibility should never be forgotten. As stated by Erick Qualman (2014) "We do not have the choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it".

Other issues in media and society

The media has multiple concerns that we must be aware of. As stated by Linda Ellerbee (n.d.) "Media literacy is not just important, it’s absolutely critical. It’s going to make the difference between whether kids are a tool of the mass media or whether the mass media is a tool for kids to use". For this reason, other issues of media should be critically evaluated by the audience. Consequently, you can find a list of other media concerns and blogs that can give you a broader idea of the topic:
